Hydroponics
Converting Plants to Hydroponics/Aquarium Use
I asked ChatGPT how to do this, and it seems to think you can just smack the plant into the water and call it a day. The main considerations were:
- Keep the pH of the water about the same as what the plant would like in the soil
- Make sure not all of the roots are submerged
- Make sure the water has lots of nutrients, similar to the ground
- Keep the water aerated with something like a fishtank compressor and airstone.
It also says you can use different resources like gravel or clay balls (lecca), because dirt would make the water dirty. If you are doing purely hydroponics, this doesn't really matter, but if you are placing into a fish tank, keeping the water clean and free of dirt is a really good thing.
As of 4/24/24 I am going to be placing a strawberry plant into one of my fish tanks for Cherry. I am going to see if I can safely split the plant in two (as most strawberry plants can be) and, if so, keep one for myself and give one to her. I will update when I have new information about how this works.
