Resources
To see info about how to start a tank, check first my tanks and aquascaping ideas for ideas. Then, check tanks and water to figure out how to pick a tank and cycle water. Next, check equipment and supplies for a list of what you need and may want to give your tank the best idea of how to survive. Namely, what kind of substrate to use (and different options), some tools that are very helpful, and different takes on water conditioners and ways to get bacteria. Next, check plants to learn about the many underwater plants you can put in a tank, how to place them and the different types, benefits, and downsides to each. This part is almost my favorite because of the sheer variety of plants you can add: plants that float only, plants that must be planted, plants that sit on rocks, even mosses and certain algae can be added. Then, consider what fish, snails, and/or shrimp (my favorite) to add to the tank. Finally, if you are really into the world of aquariums, check out breeding, though this page will probably take a while and likely never even be finished as I am not sure I will ever get to this point...
About
I first found my love of aquariums from my wonderful girlfriend Cherry, who spoke with such a passion that I found first a profound interest and then a love for aquariums. When she first told me about all of the different things that go on underwater, I was practically rolling my eyes. But very shortly (like half an hour really) I began to understand the nuances of it.
The first time I went to her aquarium (read, house) I saw how intricate the setups were. Gone were the days of me assuming that fish tanks were scummy wastelands with a few sad catfish; my whole world was opened up with aquatic plants, shrimp, snails, the (underwater) nitrogen cycle, aquascaping, the works. It was quite a beautiful sight seeing tanks that are what I always imagined the bottom of the ocean or the calm streams of the Amazon looked like. I knew from that moment that this was something I wanted to do.
I started my first tank March of 2024 and am loving every second. I still have a lot to learn, but hopefully this resource will help me (and maybe even others) learn about how to keep fish in a holistic, effective, ethical, and, most importantly, fun way.
